This is the encoding of the 1st movement of K. 165 according to the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe I/3 (ed. Hellmut Federhofer, 1963; second edition, 1986; third edition, 2003). The first, second and third edition, respectively, of NMA I/3 are encoded as 'source_1', 'source_2', and 'source_3', with the third edition as the accepted reading. Corrigenda to volume I/3 of the NMA are reported on page 108 of the corresponding Critical Report (Hellmut Federhofer, 1964), which is listed in the digital edition as 'source_4'. However, in regard to this movement, no corrections or variant readings between the editions are documented.

\n

The NMA edition is primarily based on a copy of Mozart’s autograph score once owned by Otto Jahn (NMA siglum A), now preserved at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin — Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Musikabteilung mit Mendelssohn-Archiv, shelfmark Mus. ms. 15113. As a secondary source, the editors used a modern edition by Alfred Einstein published as Edition Eulenburg (No. 1022), London et al. c. 1931 (NMA siglum B), which is based on the autograph score. In the NMA edition, preference is given to source A. The autograph score, preserved at the Biblioteka Jagiellońska in Krakow, Poland, was unavailable at the time of the first edition of vol. I/3 of the NMA.

\n

In the digital edition, the diacritic markup of editorial interventions used in the NMA print edition (i.e. small size, italics, brackets, dashed line form) are coded as additions; as such they are marked as decisions by the editors of the NMA (@resp). Wherever possible the markup of additions affects the smallest unit that can be individually addressed, usually an element. In some cases, a distinction between supplied and un-supplied elements is made through a <choice> element. With the exception of possible corrections of obvious printing errors (marked in the code as such) the coding of the musical text is faithful to the aforementioned NMA editions. Some normalizations have been applied; for a full description of the editorial principles see the Editorial Guidelines of the DME Music Editions.

The present encoding in MEI 3.0.0 (with some minor customizations) is based on a previous encoding in DOX format. The DOX data were gained from optical music recognition (OMR) and proof reading processes developed and carried out by The Packard Humanities Institute, Los Altos, CA.

\n

For technical reasons, it is possible that some of the original editorial markup not captured by OMR (e.g. small staccato signs) is not represented in the encoded versions.

\n

\n Editorial principles and coding\n

\n

Readings and Markup:

\n

The 'edited text' presents for all individual instances one accepted final reading which is 'the edition'. Alternative and, according to the source, different readings are coded in the file and may have to be activated or visualized on demand. However, sections that potentially pose particular editorial challenges may be marked up; a comment (annotation) may be available.

\n

The abovementioned source does not present any problems of textual gaps or unclear pitch. Most problems regard dynamics (presence/absence, positioning), and slurring (presence/absence, imprecision).

\n

All instances of uncertain readings are labelled 'unclear' (coded with <unclear>) and require a categorization (at the discretion of the editor) about the degree of uncertainty which is expressed in the value of the &cert attribute (low/medium/high). Readings with 'medium' or 'low' certainty must be treated as adjustments (see below); for readings with high certainty, the element <unclear> serves as a marker to signal potential ambiguities.

\n

\n

Adjustments:

\n

The 'edited text' pursues the policy of moderate parallel, i.e. vertical, adaptions between parts and adjustments of analogous musical substance within one part. The following principles guide these adjustments:

\n

- The 'edited text' accepts the concept of variation between recurring and repeated sections and material.

\n

- Vertical adaptation between parts is possible but not mandatory.

\n

- The 'edited text' accepts inconsistent slurring between parts moving synchronously, in particular if the pattern is diachronically consistent within the individual part.

\n

- Adjustments can take place within a narrow range (one or two measures), depending on the musical context and situation, e.g. in the case of a repetition of a certain pattern or in the case of a sequence or a dialogic alternation between the instruments.

\n

- Adjustment 'at a distance' is possible with some limitations, however, retroactive adjustments (from a later to an earlier instance) are excluded. For example, a particular articulation found in the thematic recapitulation of a movement is not transferred back to the parallel instance in the exposition.

\n

- Adjustments may be additions or conjectures.

\n

- Adjustments 'by analogy' point to one or more instances in the score that are the model or witness for the adjustment. The attribute &corresp serves as a pointer.

\n

- Adjustments depend on the musical context; wherever possibel, however, witnesses within the same part precede witnesses in other parts.

\n

\n

Additions:

\n

- The 'edited text' adds only a few dynamic markings, based on the immediate musical context.

\n

- In accordance with 18th-century practice, there are no additional dynamics in sections of the movement where the source does not present any dynamics, leaving it at the discretion of the performer to use appropriate dynamics.

\n

- Additions are coded with the element <supplied>.

\n

- Additions may be 'free additions' (coded with &evidence=internal) or 'adjustments' based on analogous readings in the same part or in parallel voices (coded with &evidence=analogy).

\n

\n

Conjectures:

\n

- Within the context of this edition and in accordance with the general editorial guidelines, already existing musical signs or notation elements in the source that are being altered, shifted or reinterpreted in any way are treated as so-called conjectures (coded with <choice>). The position or value of the original sign or element is marked up, using <orig> together with the new value (<corr>). 'corr' is not to be understood unilaterally as (error) correction, but as an alternative to the reading of the source; if the reading of the source is indistinct, 'corr' may also serve as a means of clarification of an unclear reading.

\n

- As in the case of additions, the evidence of conjectures may be classified as either 'internal' or 'analogy'.

\n

\n

Corrigenda:

\n

- Musical sources may contain notational elements that must be considered meaningless such as slips of a pen or errors by the copyist or engraver. In the majority of cases, errors may be eliminated, others are corrected. These 'corrigenda' are coded with <choice> as well <corr> and <sic> as child elements.

\n

Regularizations:

\n

- In the edition, the musical text of the source is subject to a formal transformation according to the standards and conventions of modern time musical typesetting.

\n

- Adaptations to musical orthography (e.g., 'cresc.' instead of 'cres:') are marked up with a single <reg> element.

\n

- In the case of more incisive interventions, such as the modern or historical use of accidentals or the resolution of short-hand notation, along with the regularized notation (<reg>) the original notation (<orig>) is available within a <choice> element.

\n

- Regularizations fall into various categories described in a &label attribute.

Editorial normalizations:

- Scoring: Scorng is generally modernized. However, the original scoring is documented in an additional <scoreDef> wrapped in a <choice><reg><orig>. For the correct order of parts (staves) in the individaul <measure>s - and hence, the display - the application of ...... is necessary. The

Das Problem ist, dass Mozart hier den Doppel-G-Schlüssel bei den "Corni in F Fa ut" verwendet, nur um zu signalisieren, dass die Hörner nicht eine Quarte nach OBEN, sondern eine Quinte nach UNTEN transponieren. In der Standardnotation (auch zur Zeit von Mozart) wurde der Dopppel-G-Schlüssel aber verwendet, um die Transposition eine OKTAVE nach unten zu signalisieren. Das gehört aber vielleicht eher zu Transkriptionsbesonderheiten (wie die getrennten Oboenstimmen), die eher in einem Kommentar behandelt werden können. Ich würde auf jeden Fall die oct-Attribute nicht anpassen, da sonst in MIDI etc. eine Oktave tiefer klingt als sein muss. Wenn Mozart den Doppel-G-Schlüssel "falsch" verwendet, können wir dies nicht übernehmen. \n NB: 'Originale Partituranordnung' ist das, was es ist, eine andere Anordnung dessen, was da ist, d.h. der Edition; es geht nicht um eine Transkription der Quelle. \n Es ist fraglich, ob die Teilung der Oboen auf 2 Systeme notwendig ist; vielleicht würde das den Tatbestand der Transkription erfüllen, um den es ja gerade nicht gehen soll. \n In dem Fall müsste man die beiden layerDef (und layer) in staffDef (und staves) umwandeln.\n \n -->\n
