Description

We are using Saxon in our product. Recently, there was an update in MSDN regarding Japanese era change. The link is here: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dotnet/2018/08/06/handling-a-new-era-in-the-japanese-calendar-in-net/.

This is to confirm if Saxon is using JapaneseCalendar or JapaneseUniSolarCalendar, and if yes, will there be any impact upon the Japanese era change which would happen by 30th April 2019. If yes, is there any plan to release a patch?

Thank you for alerting us to this.

Saxon picks up all calendar information via either the JDK / OpenJDK libraries, or via the ICU-J library. We will keep an eye open to ensure that we use the latest updates of these.

For Saxon on .NET there is a possibility that we have to watch out for, namely that IKVM "stops working" at some stage (more specifically, that it no longer works with some new version of Java / OpenJDK / .NET. We are exposed to this risk (like many other people) because the developer of IKVM (Jeroen Frijters) is no longer maintaining the software, and no-one else has picked up the reins (well, someone has, but the current position seems to be that no test material is available, which doesn't give us confidence in the new branch.) We have contingency plans to use a different architecture but the change could be disruptive if we have to do that.

I don't think it would affect a very large number of our users if we withdrew support for the traditional Japanese calendar.

  • Category set to Localization
  • Status changed from New to Closed

I am closing this on the basis that we are not planning any specific action unless more information becomes available. We think that it should be possible to implement this change simply by picking up the latest versions of the libraries that we use.
