Supporting custom events on DOM nodes

Looking at the document.onXXXX properties it appears that Saxon define listeners for a predefined set of events whether these events have matching template modes in the transformation.
The downside is that you can't define handlers for custom events which would be most convenient in some situations.
Couldn't Saxon CE register listeners for the "isxl:onXXX" modes found in the transformation (and only those)?
