Just tried the following for $v as item()* in 1 return $v And got the following: Saxon
8.7.3J from Saxonica Java version 1.5.0_05 Compiling query from D:\dev\xquery\saxon.xq
Error on line 1 column 19 of file:///W:/xquery/xqqa/creates/xml/: XPTY0004: XQuery
static error in #... :) for $v as item()* in 1#: Cardinality of range variable must be

The relevant code appears both in ExpressionParser and in QueryParser and only one
of these was patched for the Saxon 8.7.3 release. I have reopened the bug against
8.7.3.
