Please see http://www.biglist.com/lists/xsl-list/archives/200503/msg00095.html Isn't it a bug, that I have to specify indent="yes" when I've already specified method="xhtml"?

Not really a bug, more a documented limitation. The XHTML output method hasn't moved very far since I invented my own as an extension to XSLT 1.0; it needs a significant revamp to bring it into line with the current 2.0 spec, and the "conformance" section of the documentation mentions this.
