The issue was resolved to the extent that I did some investigations of the behaviour of two particular platforms (Sun JDK 1.5 and .NET 1.1) and recorded the results in the Wiki at http://saxon.wiki.sourceforge.net/UNC+filenames Anyone who would like to explore the behaviour on other platforms is welcome to do so and to add their findings. It's clearly a messy situation, with no clear standards. Generally speaking, I don't believe it's the right course of action for one piece of software to paper over the cracks in another: if the underlying Java or .NET platform doesn't support UNC filenames properly (or worse, if the internet RFCs don't support them properly) then I'm not going to try and fix that problem at the Saxon level. But of course, if someone can demonstrate that using a different Java or .NET interface would solve the problem, then I'm happy to look at it.
